Join us on the Matariki public holiday to celebrate the Māori New Year with a heartfelt community Matariki Ahunga Nui ceremony at Orewa Beach.
As the Matariki star cluster rises, we gather in remembrance, reflection, and renewal – to honour those who have passed, to celebrate new beginnings, and to share mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge and wisdom). This is a moment to come together as whānau, friends, and neighbours in the spirit of unity and aroha.
What to expect:
*A dawn ceremony with hīmene, karakia, and waiata
*Honouring the names of loved ones who have passed
*Sharing stories and knowledge about the significance of Matariki
*Hot drinks and kai to follow – please bring your own cup if you can
*A time for quiet reflection and connection
Please bring:*Warm clothes, a jacket, and rain gear – we’ll gather no matter the weather
*A camp chair or blanket to sit on
*A heart open to remembering, learning, and celebrating
*Let’s welcome the Māori New Year as a united Hibiscus Coast community. Nau mai, haere mai – everyone is welcome.
